“Artificial intelligence is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity.” Says an AI oracle and venture capitalist Dr. Kai-Fu Lee.
What do you think? Can artificial intelligence ever get advance enough to take over the world? We have seen this concept in many movies. When humans create a piece of technology that is just a little intelligent and independent; we can no longer control them. This scenario of artificial intelligence taking over the world; may seem far-fetched. And the premise of a satirical sci-fi movie, the ever-growing rate at which technological innovations and breakthroughs are occurring; should encourage us to consider the possibility that “our reliance on AI may prove to be our undoing as a civilization, sooner or later”.
If robots did take over the world; it will not happen overnight. Rather, gradually shaping and changing the role that they played in our lives. Slowly but significantly, changing the way we interact with our world. Sound familiar?
In an interview with BBC, Stephen Hawking said, “Development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. It will take off on its own, and will redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate”. It means that humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, cannot compete and will be suspended. Sounds creepy!
Advanced AI tools
Let the expert tell you about some of the most advanced pieces of AI that currently exist. And how this technology can change our world in the very near future.
the word robot was first popularized by Karel Capek, a famous Czech sci-fi writer from the early 20th century. Since then, we have been constantly pushing the boundaries of what machines are capable of; and now we have the humanoid robot, known as Sophia; that can not only hold a conversation, possess facial expressions, and recognize individuals, but has gained citizenship in Saudi Arabia.
One of the most advanced robots today is ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), created by Honda in 2000. This robot can recognize moving objects, distinguish sounds, respond to questions and travel autonomously.
One application would be self-driving cars that can gather and interpret information from observing other cars on the street. Check out the video about self-driving cars for more interesting facts and details.
Diseases are more quickly and accurately diagnosed; drug discovery is sped up.
Digital textbooks are available with the help of AI, early-stage virtual tutors help human instructors. Part of what makes us human is our ability to form memories, learn from experiences, and adapt our behaviors based on memory. This is what modern AI aims to do!
Age of AI
In the new age of artificial intelligence, experts and researchers are trying to integrate something called the “theory of mind” into machines. So, that they will not only form representation of the world but can recognize believes and emotions in other entities, allowing them to predict behaviors.
Where are we at now?
In May of 2017, Google announced the AutoML project, which involves AI design to create other AI, possibly even more efficiently than the human engineers. Wait! robots that can create more of themselves? Now that does sound like a sci-fi novel.
Can a robot takeover really happen?
Fantasy of being wiped out by androids is something plaguing our imaginations for years. There are some other hurdles to overcome before any Hollywood-type scenario ever occurred. One of our biggest worries is that robots may eventually render human labor obsolete. In 2015, a news emerged about 15 million jobs in the United Kingdom will be automated within a couple of decades; it got people to panic, fearing the loss of their jobs. Experts assess that around 50% of the world in terms of income or education, will be badly affected with job displacement in case of robot replacement.
How AI can replace you in jobs?
Because AI can learn to optimize routine jobs like separating things into bins, washing dishes, picking fruits, and answering customer service calls. In the matter of 5, 10 or 15 years, they will be displaced by AI. The experts say the probability is 31% that this development turns out to be ‘bad’ or ‘extremely bad’ for humanity.
Why we need advancement?
That’s why, Elon Musk, the founder of the companies like Tesla and SpaceX, is a well-known advocate for the regulation of artificial intelligence, claiming that “it is the fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization and that governments need to have a better understanding of this technology to fully comprehend the damage that it could do to us.”
However, some people are more optimistic and believe that people just need to change their relationship with AI and make use of their resources in the best way possible. Mikhail Naumov, co-founder of Digital Genius, believes that “AI is best used once teamed up with people”. He says that “AI is simply a tool for the customer service reps, similar to an accountant uses a calculator or a banker uses a spreadsheet.” But for many of us technology has already changed from something that is “nice to have” to something that “we fully depend on to survive.”
What is the reason to fear AI?
Another common worry is that we do not fully understand how machine learning occurs. This is referred to as the “black box” of AI where algorithms are so complicated that even professionals can’t seem to figure out what’s happening when the information goes into the system. Without truly knowing what’s going on and how robots learn from new information, some of us fear that one-day technology might just slip out of our control.
What should manage AI?
Technological advancements have indeed brought many benefits to our lives. But with the amount of power it holds, we must at least note the importance of AI safety and research.
What do you think? Is this something that we should be concerned about? Or should we just embrace the convenience and advancement that AI brings to us? Do share your thoughts in the comment section below.
